New York Fed Blog: Is Disappearance of Routine-Based Middle Class Jobs Causing Weak Job Market?

“The share of routine occupations declined from 60 percent in 1976 to 40 percent in 2012, resulting in job polarization.” Read more about it here. I’m not convinced that the Fed’s routine/non-routine labor and cognitive/manual labor dichotomies truly get to the heart of the matter.
